How a community of sport sent me looking for where the games began

I've played sport for as long as I can remember. It was always there, the teams, the training, the buzz of competition. But for most of that time, sport was simply something I did. It wasn't until I joined the Y when COVID hit that I understood what sport really is.

COVID was a strange and isolating time for everyone, and it showed me something that had always been there but I just hadn't seen it. Working across the Y's recreation services, I saw firsthand just how much connection those services create for the people who use them. When so much of normal life had fallen away, the pools, the courts, the classes and the simple act of showing up alongside other people mattered more than ever. It was right then that I understood sport was doing something far bigger than I'd given it credit for, it was holding communities together. It was never just a game or an activity.

Once I'd seen that, I couldn't unsee it. If sport could do this here and now, then it had almost certainly been doing the same thing for as long as people have existed. So I started looking backwards into the origins of sport. Where did these games actually come from? Who created them, and why? What were communities trying to do when they first picked up a ball, a stick, a stone, or each other? That curiosity is exactly what this category is for.

Cultural and traditional sports are the living evidence of that idea. Long before broadcast deals and professional leagues, communities everywhere invented their own ways to compete to settle rivalries, mark the seasons, prove courage, and come together. Each one is shaped by a place, a people, and a story, and many are still played with pride today.

So here we slow down and pay these traditions the attention they deserve. Each one is real sporting heritage with meaning to its community. You'll travel from the Swiss countryside, where Hornussen sends a puck screaming across a field, to the cliffs of Vanuatu, where the land-diving ritual of Naghol gave the world the idea of the bungee jump. You'll meet the aim and strategy of Colombia's Tejo, the controlled chaos of Florence's centuries-old Calcio Storico, and the horseback drama of Central Asia's Buzkashi. Some are fiercely competitive. Some are ceremonial. All of them carry meaning far beyond the final score and nearly all of them, at their heart, are doing the same thing I see at the Y,  bringing people together.

I'll do my best to get the history, geography, and cultural context right sourced properly, and wherever possible told with voices from within the communities themselves. The aim is simply to honour these traditions, and to leave you a little more knowledgeable about a corner of the sporting world you might never have met.
