This is where we keep the games that don't fit anywhere else, the ones invented in a single village, played at the bottom of a swimming pool, or built on rules that sound made up until you watch them. Sepak takraw, where players send a rattan ball over a net using only their feet. Underwater hockey. Kabaddi. Hurling. Chess boxing, which is exactly what it sounds like and alternates rounds of each.

You'll find three kinds of strange here, old sports with deep roots and small but fierce followings, brand-new inventions still writing their own rulebooks, and the physically absurd. Sports that ask the human body to do something it really wasn't built for. Some you can take up this weekend while others you'll only ever watch with your jaw on the floor.
